Three minor sisters, including a nine-month-old infant, died within hours of each other under mysterious circumstances in Pipora village in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district on Saturday. Authorities have launched a multi-departmental investigation to determine the exact cause of death, while police exhumed the bodies after the family buried them without conducting medical examinations or notifying officials.

The deceased have been identified as Poonam (7), Manisha (3 to 5 years old), and nine-month-old Chahat, daughters of Balmukund Kushwaha. According to local officials, all three children suffered from severe bouts of vomiting and diarrhea starting early Saturday morning before their condition rapidly deteriorated. According to preliminary statements provided by the family to investigators, the older children had eaten a home-cooked dinner of baingan bharta (mashed eggplant) and roti on Friday night. However, police noted that the circumstances surrounding the infant's death raised immediate suspicions, as the nine-month-old was solely being fed breast milk and soft food rather than the household meal.

Following the deaths, the family transported the bodies to their ancestral village in Panota and buried them between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM, citing traditional customs. Upon receiving information about the unnotified burials from the local village sarpanch, a team led by Matguwan Police Station in-charge Ankur Chaubey and senior administration officials reached the site and initiated the exhumation process. Chhatarpur Superintendent of Police Rajat Sakhlecha confirmed that the exhumed bodies have been sent for a detailed post-mortem examination. Teams from the district health, food, and forensic departments have also searched the family’s residence, collecting food samples and examining the premises for potential hazards—including pesticide pouches that were reportedly stored near grain supplies. Investigators are keeping all possibilities open, including severe food poisoning, accidental pesticide contamination, or other external factors, pending autopsy and forensic laboratory results.
