Cyclone Arnab, currently classified by the India Meteorological Department as a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, continued its approach towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts on Wednesday morning, September 23.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, the system moved westwards at 12 kmph during the previous six hours and was centred at 5:30 a.m. IST on 23 September 2026 near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 84.7°E. Why It Is Called Cyclone Arnab

The name Arnab is being used in some reports because it is the next name on the regional list of tropical cyclone names for the North Indian Ocean. The list is maintained by the World Meteorological Organisation and the IMD, with contributions from member countries. Bangladesh proposed the name Arnab, which means “ocean” in Bengali. That said, the IMD has not yet classified the system as a cyclonic storm. It remains a deep depression. The name Arnab would be formally assigned only if the system intensifies further to cyclonic storm strength.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over parts of south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
