A massive search operation is underway in South East Delhi’s Jasola village after a 15-year-old boy was swept away in an open drain while attempting to retrieve a stray kite. The incident took place around 11:00 AM on Saturday near the Cribs Hospital stretch. The teenager, identified as Mithun, a Class 8 student, was dressed in his school uniform and getting ready for school when the incident occurred. According to family members, he climbed an elevated area to catch a kite, lost his balance, and slipped directly into the swollen waterway.
Upon receiving a police control room (PCR) call, teams from the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service (DFS), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and local emergency agencies rushed to the spot to launch a rescue operation. Rescue personnel, along with deep-water divers, worked through the night to trace the boy. However, heavily accumulated silt, garbage, and narrow accessibility along the residential stretches have severely hindered search efforts. The affected drain carries treated wastewater from the Jasola sewage treatment plant toward the Agra Canal. Authorities noted that critical stretches of the drain are underground or tightly bordered by structures, preventing heavy machinery like bulldozers from clearing access points easily. Frustrated family members and local residents gathered along the drain perimeter as operations continued into Sunday. Mithun's family, who lives in rented accommodation in Jasola village, urged authorities to intensify direct diving efforts inside the closed sections. The incident has renewed sharp criticism from local residents over open drains and unmaintained infrastructure across the National Capital Region, which pose severe hazards to pedestrians and children during seasonal rains.
