Ranchi, Aug 28: 90 students of a school in Jamshedpur were suspended for two-days on Monday for applying mehndi on their hands on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The suspension order has sparked protest from the parents, who said their wards will be fearful while celebrating any festival henceforth.

The incident was reported in Jamshedpur's Rajendra Vidyalaya, where students of Class 7th to Class 12th are enrolled. The school administration took action against the mehndi-clad girls on disciplinary grounds.

The aggrieved parents on Tuesday met the school authorities and registered their complaint.

The parents justified the mehndi on their children's hands, saying it is part of the culture for sisters to apply mehndi on their hands on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Notably, Raksha Bandhan was celebrated across the nation on Sunday. The festival involves tying of a rakhi or sacred cloth by sisters on the wrists of their brothers. The latter, in return, offers gifts to the former and promises to guard her from all threats throughout his life.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister, the President and constitutional dignitaries wished the nation, celebrating the brother-sister bond.
