Kerala: Toddler Dies Days After Anaesthesia for Lip Injury, Case Filed
An 18-month-old boy died at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur after remaining critical for five days following anaesthesia administered for a minor lip injury procedure, according to his family. Payyannur Police have registered a case against the anaesthetist under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, while the hospital said all procedures followed protocol and it is cooperating with investigators.
An 18-month-old baby boy died on Friday night, July 10, after remaining in critical condition for five days in Kerala's Kannur. His family has alleged that the child’s condition deteriorated after he was administered anaesthesia for a minor procedure to treat a cut on his lip.
The toddler, Devansh Shouria, died at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur on Friday night. He was the son of T. Suraj and Vijisha of Mathamangalam. According to the family, Devansh suffered a lip injury after falling while playing at home on July 5. He was taken to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, where doctors planned to stitch the wound under anaesthesia. Police Probe Death of 18-Month-Old After Anaesthesia for Lip Stitching
The family alleged that his health worsened immediately after the anaesthesia was administered and that he never regained consciousness. He was later shifted to the hospital’s Kannur unit for specialised treatment, where he died at around 9 pm on Friday.

Payyannur Police have registered a case against the anaesthetist, Dr Anjali, under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering human life or personal safety. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Baby Memorial Hospital, in a statement, said that all medical procedures were carried out as per protocol. It added that the child was provided with every possible treatment under the supervision of senior specialists from various departments of the hospital. The hospital also said it is fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.
The case remains under investigation as police examine the sequence of events leading to the toddler's death. Authorities have not yet released any conclusions regarding responsibility or the exact medical cause of death.
