The wait for one of Uttar Pradesh's most anticipated infrastructure projects is nearly over. The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, a brand new six-lane access-controlled corridor, is set to transform travel between the state capital and its biggest industrial hub, cutting journey time from nearly three hours to just 30 to 45 minutes.

What Is the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway?

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is a 63-km high-speed six-lane corridor designed to provide a faster, safer, and smoother alternative to the existing NH-27 route. The expressway directly connects with the Kanpur-Lucknow Highway and the Unnao-Lalganj (Raebareli) Highway, creating a seamless inter-city travel network across two of UP's most commercially active cities. Ganga Expressway Opens: Enjoy 15 Days of Toll-Free Travel From Meerut to Prayagraj; Know How Much You Will Save.

Launch Date and Inauguration

The expressway was initially expected to open on 21 April but the schedule was revised. According to reports, the new target launch date is 24 May, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to carry out the inauguration. Once official clearance is granted, the road will open to public traffic immediately.

How Much Time Will the Expressway Save?

Currently, the 94-km Lucknow-Kanpur stretch on NH-27 takes 2.5 to 3 hours, particularly during peak hours. The new expressway, with a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h, will reduce that journey to just 30 to 45 minutes, making daily commuting between the two cities genuinely practical for the first time. PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates 594-KM-Long 6-Lane Ganga Expressway in Hardoi (Watch Video).

Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Toll Rates

The new toll rates finalised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are significantly higher than the current NH-27 toll of approximately INR 95 one-way for cars.

Light Commercial Vehicles: One-way INR 445, Return INR 670. Bus and Truck: One-way INR 935, Return INR 1,405. Heavy Commercial Motor Vehicles: One-way INR 1,020, Return INR 1,530.

Economic and Strategic Impact

Beyond daily commuters, the expressway is expected to serve as a major economic driver for Uttar Pradesh. By enabling faster freight movement, boosting trade between industrial and commercial zones, and reducing pressure on existing highways, the corridor is poised to strengthen the economic ties between Lucknow and Kanpur significantly.

For regular travellers and businesses alike, the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is not just a road. It is a long-overdue upgrade to one of UP's most critical travel corridors.
