A primary school headmaster in Madhya Pradesh’s Maihar district has been accused by students and their parents of reporting to school drunk, defecating on the premises and making children clean the excreta. Parents have also alleged irregular attendance, disrupted mid-day meals and gutkha use on the school premises.
The allegations were made against the headmaster of Amura Primary School by students and their parents, NDTV reported. A Class 3 student claimed he was made to pick up excreta and was abused, while parents alleged that the headmaster often arrived late and that regular classes were not conducted. Students Allege Forced Cleaning
"Sir comes drunk. He defecates inside the school and then makes us clean it. He chews Rajshree (a gutkha brand) and spits all over the school," said a student at Amura Primary School.
A boy studying in Class 3 was one of those who were allegedly forced to clean faeces. "Sir made me pick up excreta and abused me. He comes drunk and can't teach multiplication tables," he said. The allegations have raised concerns among parents about the children's welfare and the functioning of the school. Parents Allege Irregular Attendance
Villagers and parents also alleged that the headmaster, identified as Kol, regularly arrives late at the school. According to the allegations, he sometimes reaches the school around noon, leaving students without proper supervision or instruction.
Parents claimed that children are often left wandering around the school during this period. They also alleged that regular classes are not held and that the mid-day meal system has been disrupted.
Gutkha Stains Visible On Walls
Parents further alleged that the headmaster chews gutkha and spits it across the school premises. Gutkha stains were reportedly visible on the walls of the school. Radha Dwivedi, mother of one of the students, said that the headmaster also makes children sweep the floor and fetch water.
"The teacher has no fixed schedule. When he does arrive, he chews gutkha and spits all over the school. He comes drunk and is not able to speak to anyone. He treats the school like a toilet. He relieves himself wherever he pleases and makes the children clean it. Not just my child, he makes others do this too," she said.
Parents Raise Mid-Day Meal Concerns
Another guardian alleged that Kol generally arrives at the school around 11 am-12 pm and does not follow a fixed schedule. The guardian also claimed that the midday meal is not served regularly and that gutkha stains on the premises have not been cleaned.
"The children just wander around while he is in an intoxicated state. After defecating, he makes the children clean it up," stated Kranti Yadav, mother of another student. Rukmani Bunkar, another mother, echoed similar concerns. "The children get no food or drink, and he teaches them nothing. There is no one here to oversee things," she alleged.
Headmaster Denies Allegations
During an interaction at the school, the headmaster was reportedly watching YouTube videos on a tablet. He denied the allegations against him. When asked about the gutkha stains visible around the school, a visibly drunk Kol replied, "We will clean it up." The allegations have not been independently established, and the headmaster has denied them.
Block Education Officer (BEO) Rajesh Dwivedi said the matter had come to his notice. A show-cause notice has been served on the concerned teacher by the cluster principal, according to the BEO. Dwivedi added that a proposal to suspend the headmaster is being sent to the District Education Officer (DEO)'s office.
The allegations have prompted scrutiny of the headmaster's attendance, classroom teaching, mid-day meal arrangements and the treatment of students.
The proposed suspension and departmental proceedings are expected to determine whether the allegations made by students and parents are substantiated. Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry and the response submitted by the headmaster to the show-cause notice.
