Mumbai: BMC Advises Residents To Boil and Filter Drinking Water After Muddy Tap Water Complaints

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, July 20, issued a precautionary advisory asking residents in parts of Mumbai's western suburbs and the island city to filter and boil drinking water before consumption. The advisory follows complaints of muddy tap water after heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of reservoirs supplying water to the city.

The civic body said the recent rains increased turbidity in the reservoir water, affecting the quality of water reaching some parts of Mumbai. The BMC said its Water Engineering Department has initiated measures at water treatment plants to reduce turbidity. Officials added that adequate chlorination is also being carried out to ensure the supplied water remains disinfected and safe for use.

As a precaution, the BMC has advised residents in the affected areas to filter and boil drinking water before consumption until normal water quality is restored. The civic body said the advisory is intended as a preventive measure while treatment processes continue to improve water clarity.

Mumbai receives its drinking water from a network of reservoirs located in surrounding districts. During periods of heavy rainfall, increased runoff into reservoir catchment areas can raise turbidity levels, requiring additional treatment before water is supplied to consumers.

The BMC said it is continuing to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to maintain water quality across the city's supply network.
