Mumbai: Jogeshwari Doctor Targeted in INR 15 Lakh Extortion Attempt As 4 Threaten To Leak His Private Video on Social Media
An extortion case has been filed in Mumbai after four individuals allegedly demanded INR 15 lakh from a Jogeshwari hospital's medical officer. The suspects confronted Dr. Prakash Pawar with a video of him working in a private café, threatening to leak it on social media. Police are currently analysing CCTV and call records to identify the group.
The Jogeshwari police have registered a case of extortion against four unidentified individuals, including a woman, for allegedly demanding INR 15 lakh from a senior medical officer. The complainant, Dr Prakash Pawar, a nodal officer at the Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari East, was reportedly threatened with the release of a social media video if the demand was not met.
The Incident and Allegations
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident occurred on May 6 at approximately 12:30 PM. Dr Pawar, 45, stated that three men and a woman entered his hospital cabin and confronted him. One of the individuals allegedly presented a video on a mobile phone showing the doctor working on a laptop at a private café. The group reportedly questioned why government-related tasks were being performed at a private establishment rather than a secure facility. The accused allegedly issued an ultimatum, giving the doctor one hour to respond before they left the premises.
Extortion Demand and Threats
Following the encounter, Dr Pawar reportedly received multiple phone calls from an unknown number. The callers allegedly demanded a payment of INR 15 lakh to prevent the video from being uploaded to social media platforms. The FIR further states that the unidentified callers directed the doctor to bring the money outside the hospital building. Dr Pawar subsequently approached the local authorities to report the harassment and the financial demand.
Nodal Responsibilities and Background
Dr Pawar, a resident of Borivali West, holds a significant administrative role at the hospital. He is currently serving as the nodal officer for the Hajj portal, a position that requires him to manage and upload fitness and vaccination certificates for pilgrims. The sensitive nature of this digital documentation likely formed the basis for the group's accusations regarding data security and the location of his work. The Jogeshwari police have booked the four unidentified suspects under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for extortion and criminal intimidation. Investigators are currently analysing CCTV footage from the hospital premises and tracking the call data records (CDR) of the unknown number used to make the threats. No arrests have been made as of Monday afternoon, and the investigation remains ongoing.
