A fresh Hindi-versus-Marathi language dispute has surfaced in Maharashtra after a passenger and a ticket checker (TC) were involved in a heated argument aboard a Mumbai AC local train. The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, is now under investigation by railway authorities.

According to preliminary information, the dispute began inside an air-conditioned coach when a passenger allegedly insisted that a non-Marathi-speaking ticket checker communicate in Marathi. Previous Language-Related Incident in Maharashtra

The latest dispute comes months after another language-related incident in Maharashtra drew attention. Last year, a 19-year-old BSc student from Kalyan allegedly died by suicide after he was reportedly harassed and assaulted by fellow commuters on a local train over speaking Hindi instead of Marathi, according to his father.

Arnav Khaire, a first-year student at Kelkar College in Mulund, was travelling in a crowded second-class compartment after his first-class pass had expired. According to a complaint filed by his father, Jitendra Khaire, Arnav had asked fellow passengers in Hindi to make space, after which some commuters allegedly questioned why he was not speaking Marathi and assaulted him despite his saying that he was Marathi.

“The fear and mental stress caused by this incident pushed him towards suicide. I want a full investigation and justice for my son," Khaire told TOI. Police had launched an investigation into that case.

The latest viral video has once again brought attention to language-related disputes in Maharashtra. Railway officials have said they will complete their investigation before deciding on any further action in the Mumbai local train incident.
