A seven-year-old boy studying at a government-aided tribal residential school in Maharashtra’s Palghar district died on Monday after experiencing high fever and severe breathing difficulties. Following his death, health officials admitted 26 other students from the same institution to a primary healthcare center after they exhibited symptoms of cold, cough, and fever.

The deceased child, identified as Shreyas Ambat, was a Class 1 student residing at the Maswan ashram school in Palghar. According to local administration officials, the child developed a fever on August 22 and received initial medical attention at a nearby Primary Health Centre (PHC). On Monday morning, after his condition rapidly deteriorated and his blood oxygen levels dropped, doctors recommended an immediate transfer to the Rural Hospital in Manor. The ashram school houses nearly 400 resident students. Prompted by concerns over a potential infectious disease outbreak, local health authorities launched an on-site medical screening across the facility. Twenty-six students showing symptoms such as body ache, cough, and mild fever were placed under observation at the Maswan PHC as a precautionary measure. Blood samples have been dispatched to laboratories for diagnostic testing to pinpoint the cause of the illness.

Vishal Khatri, the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) officer for Dahanu, visited the school and healthcare center to meet with affected students and parents. Officials confirmed that the exact cause of death will be established after the post-mortem report is finalized. Meanwhile, preventive measures and continuous monitoring have been initiated on campus. Palghar Shocker: 15-Year-Old Student Collapses and Dies of Suspected Heart Attack After Finishing School Marathon During Sports Day Event.

The incident follows another tragic event in the state’s tribal residential school system earlier this month. On August 10, three young girls died and three others were hospitalised after being bitten by a venomous common krait while sleeping on the floor of their hostel room at an ashram school in Japtalai, Gadchiroli district. State authorities subsequently revoked the license of the Gadchiroli school and ordered a state-wide safety audit across all government and aided residential institutions.
