Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, May 27, urged citizens to take precautions against rising temperatures as several parts of India continued to experience severe heatwave conditions. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister advised people to stay hydrated, avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours and extend help to others coping with the extreme heat.
“Temperatures are continuously rising in different parts of the country, and along with this, the many difficulties caused by the heat in daily life are also increasing. I urge all my fellow citizens to take as many precautions as possible," the Prime Minister wrote in his post. In his message, Modi urged people to regularly drink water and carry water bottles while travelling outdoors. “Please keep yourselves hydrated and carry water with you when stepping out of your homes. In such weather, your sensitivity also becomes a great source of support. If possible, do offer a glass of water to anyone who is thirsty," he added.
The Prime Minister also encouraged citizens to check on elderly family members during the ongoing heatwave, particularly parents and grandparents who may be more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Severe Heatwave Conditions Across Several States
According to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department, severe heatwave conditions were recorded in parts of Chhattisgarh, while isolated regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Madhya Pradesh also witnessed extreme temperatures.
Heatwave conditions were additionally reported from parts of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The weather department said the ongoing spell of extreme heat is affecting large parts of northern, central and eastern India.
IMD Forecast for Delhi, Punjab and Haryana
The IMD has forecast continued heatwave conditions for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on May 27 and May 28. Severe heatwave conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over the next two days, the agency said.
Authorities have advised residents to minimise outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated and follow public health precautions as temperatures remain significantly above normal levels.
Heatwave Safety Measures
Health experts generally recommend avoiding direct sun exposure during afternoon hours, wearing light clothing and increasing water intake during prolonged heat spells.
Officials have also urged people to monitor symptoms of heat exhaustion and provide assistance to vulnerable individuals, including outdoor workers, children and the elderly.
