Fourth Targeted Attack on Police Personnel This Year
The killing comes amid a series of attacks on police personnel in Punjab. India Today reported that the Harjit Singh case is being examined as the fourth targeted attack on police personnel in the state this year.
The latest incident also follows an attack on ASI Jaswant Singh in the Amritsar area on September 11. Motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly opened fire on him while he was returning home after duty. A bullet grazed his head, but he survived the attack. Police are examining whether there is any connection between the recent incidents. No such link has been established publicly so far.
Government Announces Financial Assistance
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore for Harjit Singh's family following his death. HDFC Bank has also announced an additional ₹1 crore insurance payout, according to reports.
The Punjab government has said it will support the family of the deceased officer, while the police have assured that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
Earlier Shooting in Amritsar Also Under Probe
The ASI's killing occurred hours after another fatal shooting in Amritsar. A man identified as Sahilpreet Singh was reportedly shot outside his house in the Islamabad Nagar area by two motorcycle-borne attackers. The suspects in that case also fled the scene.
Police are investigating the two cases separately while examining available evidence. The investigation into Harjit Singh's killing remains underway, with CCTV footage, forensic evidence and other technical inputs being examined to establish the sequence of events and identify the assailants.
