Rapido Driver Loses INR 1,000 in ‘Hospital Emergency’ Scam After Fake INR 5,000 Credit Alert

A seventh-semester college student driving for bike-taxi aggregator Rapido in Bengaluru lost his hard-earned day’s earnings of ₹1,000 after falling victim to an elaborate "hospital emergency" digital payment scam. The student, who took up the gig work to earn extra pocket money and surprise his mother, shared his experience on Reddit to warn fellow gig workers and the general public against similar manipulative tactics.

The fraud unfolded when the student accepted a ride-hailing and delivery request originating from Lakshmi Hospital in RT Nagar. Shortly after accepting the order, the driver received a phone call from an individual claiming to be in distress. The caller alleged that a relative was admitted to the hospital and needed to be discharged immediately, but his personal UPI app was failing at the billing desk. Capitalizing on emotional urgency, the scammer offered to transfer ₹5,000 to the driver's bank account along with an extra ₹300 tip if he would settle the hospital desk fee on his behalf. The student agreed to help and provided his mother's phone number for the fund transfer.

Shortly after, his mother received a spoofed SMS that closely resembled a legitimate bank alert, falsely indicating that ₹5,000 had been credited to her account. Believing the text was genuine, she transferred ₹5,000 from her own balance to her son so he could clear the caller's bill.

The fraudster then sent a QR code to the student, instructing him to scan and pay an initial ₹1,000 "desk fee." Caught up in the urgency of the situation, the student scanned the code and transferred his own money. However, suspicion arose when the scammer immediately sent a second QR code and aggressively pressured him to send the remaining balance. When the student's mother checked her mobile banking application, she discovered that no funds had actually entered her account and realized the notification SMS was fake. Upon confronting the caller and pleading for his ₹1,000 back—explaining it represented an entire day of driving in traffic—the scammer disconnected the call and blocked his number.

Digital financial fraud using emotional manipulation and spoofed SMS alerts has seen a noticeable rise across Indian metros. Experts advise gig workers and online payment users to never transfer funds or process transactions for strangers, and to always verify bank balances directly inside banking applications rather than relying on text messages.
