The Bar Council of India on Friday suspended advocate Samarth Singh from practising law with immediate effect amid an ongoing investigation into the death of his wife, Twisha Sharma, in Bhopal. The decision comes as authorities intensify their probe into allegations of dowry harassment and dowry death linked to the case, as reported by TOI. Sharma, a former Miss Pune winner, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, just months after her marriage. Police subsequently registered an FIR against Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, under provisions related to dowry death, cruelty, and other offences.
Bar Council Cites Serious Allegations

The suspension order was passed pending further consideration by the Bar Council’s disciplinary body. The organisation said advocates, as officers of the court, are expected to maintain public confidence in the justice system.
Husband Surrenders After Days Missing
The development came shortly after Singh surrendered before authorities following nearly 10 days of being untraceable. According to reports, he first appeared before a court in Jabalpur before being taken into custody and later transferred to Bhopal for further investigation. During proceedings in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Singh’s counsel informed the court that he wished to withdraw his anticipatory bail plea and surrender before the trial court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, opposed granting procedural relief, arguing that the accused had remained absconding during the investigation.
The case has drawn widespread public attention amid allegations by Sharma’s family that the initial investigation was inadequate. Questions were also raised regarding electronic evidence and the handling of CCTV footage from the residence.
Following demands from Sharma’s family, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second post-mortem examination. The state government has also recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation amid growing scrutiny over the handling of the case. Authorities have not yet announced a timeline for completion of the investigation.
