'You Are Godi Media, Students Are Right': Kalyan Banerjee Loses Cool During Media Interaction (Video)

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has ignited political debate after strongly defending youth demonstrators linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) during their high-stakes protest in New Delhi. Asked about reported incidents of violence against reporters and security personnel during the march, the senior lawmaker dismissed the queries, accusing sections of the media of biased coverage and justifying the anger of the protesting students.

The confrontation occurred against the backdrop of CJP’s "Sansad Chalo" march to Parliament, organized over demands regarding paper leaks and systemic education reforms. When questioned about allegations that protesters had pelted stones and assaulted media personnel and security forces, Banerjee lost his cool, stating:

"If you want to ask Godi media-like questions, do it. I won't say anything. Will you do this to the young people of the country? Why will they not do it then? Why did you go there? Extending full political backing to the demonstration and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk—who has been on a fast in support of student rights—Banerjee directly targeted the central government.

"We will support this. What Narendra Modi has done is unfortunate. Who will you listen to, if not students?" he added.

The protest, organized by the CJP under founder Abhijeet Dipke, has escalated over recent weeks around major student issues, including alleged NEET examination paper leaks, accountability in the education sector, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. While CJP leaders accused the Delhi Police of excessive force, lathi-charging students, and detaining key organizers, law enforcement personnel stated that several officers were injured after sections of the crowd turned violent and pelted stones. Banerjee’s controversial remarks highlight the deepening political divide in the capital. While opposition leaders frame the CJP demonstration as a legitimate fight for student rights against administrative overreach, media trade bodies and law enforcement officials have expressed mounting concern over the safety of journalists and security personnel deployed at volatile protest sites.
