Banks in several parts of India are closed today, May 27, on account of Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar for fiscal year 2026-27. However, banking operations continue as usual in many other states where the festival will be observed on May 28 instead.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declares regional bank holidays to mark national, religious and local observances. Apart from these notified holidays, banks across the country remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as Sundays every month.
Eid-Ul-Adha Bank Holiday May 27: States Where Banks Are Closed Today
The RBI has designated Wednesday, May 27, as a bank holiday in select regions observing Eid-ul-Adha based on local moon-sighting traditions.
Banks are closed today in: Guwahati, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, New Delhi, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram. In the rest of the country, banks are functioning normally on May 27.
Why Bakrid Is Being Observed on Different Dates
The difference in bank holidays stems from regional moon-sighting practices followed across India.
Religious bodies in Jammu and Kashmir announced that Bakrid would be observed on May 27 following local sightings linked to the Islamic month of Zil Hajj. However, several moon-sighting committees and Islamic organisations in other parts of India said the crescent moon was not visible on the evening of May 18.
As a result, Eid-ul-Adha or Id-ul-Zuha will be celebrated in most Indian states on Thursday, May 28. The Jama Masjid Shahi Imam also stated that the moon was not sighted in most parts of India, leading to the revised festival date for the majority of states.

Banking Services Available During Bakra Eid 2026 Holidays
Even during bank holidays, customers can continue using several digital banking services without interruption.
Online banking, mobile banking, UPI payments, ATM withdrawals and digital fund transfers typically remain operational during public holidays. Customers can access essential banking services for transactions, bill payments and account management through online platforms.
However, branch-based services such as cheque clearance, cash deposits at counters and in-person customer assistance may remain unavailable on notified holidays.
