The Delhi High Court had convicted Kumar in 2018 for his role in the deaths of five people during rioting in Delhi's Palam Colony on November 1 and 2, 1984, following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on December 17, 2018. Kumar had challenged the conviction and sentence before the Supreme Court, where his appeal was pending at the time of his death.
