The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated the search for a new member of its Men's Selection Committee, inviting applications after the departure of former chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar's contract concluded on October 4, 2026, and he informed the board prior to the Annual General Meeting on September 18 that he would not seek an extension. BCCI Opens Applications for Men's Selector

The BCCI issued a media advisory on October 6, 2026, formally inviting eligible candidates to apply for the single vacant position. This pivotal appointment comes as the Indian men's team continues its preparations for future international assignments, building on a highly successful period under Agarkar's leadership.

Eligibility and Application Details

Prospective candidates are required to meet stringent eligibility criteria set by the BCCI:

  • Playing Experience: Must have played a minimum of 7 Test Matches; OR 30 First-Class Matches; OR 10 One Day International Matches and 20 First-Class Matches.
  • Retirement Status: Must have retired from the game at least five years previously.
  • Committee Service: Any person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee, as defined in the BCCI's Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations, for a cumulative period of five years will not be eligible.

Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM IST on October 14, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will subsequently be called for personal interviews.

Role and Responsibilities

The incoming selector will assume a comprehensive role within the committee, tasked with a broad range of responsibilities essential for the sustained success of the national team. Key duties include:

  • Selecting the Senior National Men's Team across all formats (Tests, ODIs, T20Is).
  • Identifying emerging talent and developing a robust bench strength for the national squad.
  • Scouting and assessing players through domestic and international matches.
  • Attending team meetings and travelling for matches as required.
  • Preparing and submitting quarterly evaluation reports on team performance to the BCCI Apex Council.
  • Addressing the media on team selections when instructed by the BCCI.
  • Playing a role in appointing captains for different formats.

Interim Leadership and Committee Composition

With Agarkar's departure, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha has stepped in as the interim chairman of the Men's Selection Committee. The other continuing members of the panel are Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh. The selection of the chief selector is typically determined by the candidate with the most Test match experience among the committee members.

Pragyan Ojha, who has played 24 Tests, could be elevated to the permanent chief selector role if the newly appointed member has fewer Test caps. However, reports have also suggested former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel, with 25 Tests, as a potential candidate, who would outrank Ojha in seniority if appointed. The new selector is also expected to represent the West Zone, filling the slot previously held by Agarkar. When Did Bhuvneshwar Kumar Last Play for India? Ajit Agarkar's Legacy

Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chief selector, which began in July 2023, was marked by significant success for Indian cricket. Under his watch, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and secured victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. His departure leaves big shoes to fill, but the BCCI's swift action in inviting applications ensures a smooth transition in the crucial selection process.

This proactive step by the BCCI aims to maintain the high standards of selection and continue India's strong performance on the international cricketing stage.
