GitLab, the American software development platform, has announced a significant organisational overhaul that includes workforce reductions and a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence. In a memo to employees, investors, and customers, CEO Bill Staples outlined plans to restructure the company to better position it for what he termed the "agentic era" of software engineering.

Restructuring for the 'Agentic Era'

As part of the reorganisation, GitLab plans to reduce its global operational footprint by cutting the number of countries where it maintains smaller teams by up to 30 per cent. In his memo, Staples emphasised that the changes are designed to streamline operations rather than serve as a simple cost-cutting exercise. "The cuts are not an AI optimization or cost cutting exercise," Staples wrote. "We intend to reinvest the vast majority of savings back into the business to accelerate our unique opportunity in the agentic era." The company, which employed approximately 2,580 people as of January 2026, has not disclosed the exact number of employees who will be impacted. The restructuring process is expected to be finalised by June 1, one day before the company's scheduled quarterly earnings report. GitLab intends to conduct this process openly, including the provision of a voluntary separation window for eligible staff.

Contradictory Hiring Trends by GitLab

Despite the planned layoffs, GitLab continues to maintain active job listings in key markets, including India and the United States. On LinkedIn, the company currently has over 20 open positions based in India for remote roles, including AI Engineers, Forward Deployed Engineers, and Customer Success Engineers. This simultaneous move toward restructuring in some regions while hiring in others has sparked debate online regarding the company's strategic direction. GitLab's Strategic AI Shift

Staples argued that the software industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation where "software will be built by machines, directed by people." By embedding AI agents into internal workflows - such as automating code reviews, approvals, and operational handoffs - GitLab aims to increase development speed and efficiency. The CEO noted that while AI will augment work in many areas, the company still requires human expertise for complex architectural decisions and customer problem-solving.

"In some cases AI can augment and accelerate what team members have been doing, in other places we need to expand certain roles to go faster," Staples stated. GitLab's quarterly earnings report on June 2 is expected to provide further clarity on the final scope and financial impact of these restructuring efforts.
