Israeli artificial intelligence firm AI21 Labs has announced a sweeping organisational restructuring that includes a strategic pivot and a major workforce reduction. The company will cut its headcount by more than 60%, reducing its staff from approximately 180 employees to around 70. The sharp downsizing follows the collapse of acquisition talks with tech company Nebius.

Instead of an acquisition, AI21 Labs has signed a commercial partnership agreement with Nebius. The firm plans to focus its remaining resources entirely on AI agent optimisation technology built around its flagship Maestro system. Consequently, the company will discontinue the sale of its standalone large language models, concluding that rely ing solely on model sales was no longer a sustainable revenue stream. Meta Layoffs 2026: Employees Packed Free Snacks, Drinks and Chargers Ahead of 8,000 Job Cuts, Ex-Worker Recalls ‘Doomsday’ Mood.

AI21 Layoffs, Maestro System Shift

The strategic overhaul represents a definitive turn away from the company's previous dual-track approach. For the past two years, AI21 Labs divided its operations between developing its Jamba family of language models and building the Maestro platform. Moving forward, the company will dedicate itself to addressing the complexities enterprise clients face when deploying and managing AI agents in real-world environments.

According to company officials, manual optimisation of AI configurations has become too complex for businesses to manage efficiently. The Maestro system aims to resolve this bottleneck by predicting operational costs and success probabilities across various models and tools. The software automatically runs simulations to establish the most cost-effective and reliable setup, transforming agent management into a data-driven engineering discipline.

AI21 Nebius Acquisition Collapse and Partnership

The workforce reduction coincided with the termination of buyout discussions with Nebius. Although the acquisition did not materialise, AI21 secured a commercial agreement with Nebius worth tens of millions of dollars. Under the new contract, Nebius and other international corporate clients will integrate the Maestro platform to build and run their own AI agent optimisation solutions.

AI21 has also solidified partnership agreements with several other tech firms, including website creation platform Wix, which will base a portion of its digital operations on the Maestro engine. While standalone models will no longer be sold, AI21 emphasised that its proprietary language models remain a vital technological foundation for its shifting software ecosystem.

Enterprise AI Implementation Challenges and Growth

Founded in 2017 by Amnon Shashua, Yoav Shoham, and Ori Goshen, AI21 Labs stated that rapid developments in the wider artificial intelligence sector forced a comprehensive re-evaluation of its business model. Management acknowledged the difficulty of parting with a large segment of its workforce but insisted the reallocation of capital is necessary to position the firm for future growth. Meta Layoffs 2026: Employees Packed Free Snacks, Drinks and Chargers Ahead of 8,000 Job Cuts, Ex-Worker Recalls ‘Doomsday’ Mood.

The corporate pivot highlights an industry-wide challenge as tech firms transition from simply training massive models to making AI agents functional, accurate, and financially viable for enterprise adoption. By focusing exclusively on automation and efficiency tools, AI21 hopes to secure a stable niche in a highly volatile global technology market.
