The girl was transported to Materno Infantil University Hospital in Gran Canaria, where she remained under specialist care.

According to reports, doctors were unable to reverse the effects of the injuries she sustained. Medical professionals reportedly determined that the child had suffered irreversible neurological damage. She died in the early hours of Wednesday while surrounded by family members. Following the child's death, Sebastián Quintana, president of maritime safety organisation Canarias 1500 Km de Costa, expressed condolences to the family and reiterated the importance of constant supervision around water. He said: "With deep sorrow, we send our condolences to his parents and the entire family."

"I would like to take this opportunity to remind mothers and fathers of the need to constantly watch over little children and get into the water with them." The death of the British toddler follows several other fatal incidents involving children in Spain in recent days. A four-year-old British girl died on Saturday after being pulled from a hotel swimming pool in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. Emergency services responded to the scene, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Another British four-year-old reportedly died after falling into a swimming pool at a holiday property near the Costa del Sol. Separately, a three-year-old Danish boy died after a near-drowning incident at a rental property in Can Picafort, Santa Margalida, on the island of Majorca.

In Tarragona, three teenage boys died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Arrabassada beach. Emergency responders attempted prolonged resuscitation efforts, but the victims later died either at the scene or in hospital.
