Guilty Plea and Investigation Details
Dwight Chris John entered his guilty plea to possessing child s*xual abuse material depicting a minor under the age of 12, reports the US Department of Justice. According to court documents, relatives contacted the Ketchikan Police Department in May 2024 after discovering a USB drive containing suspected CSAM while John was serving a state prison sentence for separate child s*xual abuse offences. Law enforcement officers subsequently reviewed devices belonging to John, including cell phones and a laptop, where they uncovered dozens of explicit photos of a minor victim alongside more than 1,000 additional images of prepubescent children, including infants and toddlers. Investigators established that the primary victim was known to John through an institution in Mexico, where he admitted to producing explicit photographs during trips in 2018 and 2019.

"Dwight Chris John repeatedly exploited a vulnerable child in Mexico and engaged in the exploitation of children online in Alaska,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Department of Justice's Criminal Division. “Yesterday's guilty plea is an important step toward justice for these children. We will hold U.S. citizens accountable wherever they exploit children," he added.

Sentencing and Legal Framework
The prosecution was brought under Operation Relentless Justice and Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice to combat child exploitation and abuse. John is scheduled to be sentenced on December 16. He faces a statutory mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of 15 years, with the final sentence to be determined by a federal district court judge.
