Boy Disappeared After Sleepwalking

According to the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, Jackson was last seen at around midnight in the 1100 block of Northwest Vivion Road, wearing a gray T-shirt and gray shorts. Family members told investigators that Jackson had a history of sleepwalking and had apparently walked out of the house while asleep.

At around 12:30 p.m., police confirmed that the boy's body had been found in a pond near Briarcliff Village, approximately half a mile from where he had gone missing. Fire crews attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Missouri Plane Crash: 12 Dead After Aircraft Crashes Near Butler Memorial Airport in US.

Police Investigating, No Foul Play Suspected

Police said the investigation is ongoing but stressed that there is currently no indication of foul play. Officials added that treating the case as an active death investigation is routine practice until the medical examiner completes the examination and determines the official cause and manner of death.

Before Jackson was found, his family shared that he had experienced sleepwalking episodes in the past.

"The first time it happened was when we were in San Diego, and he (sleepwalked) and then someone found him on the street and they called 911. They brought him over and he was found safely," said his sister, Semina Richard.

She added: "The second time, it was here. ... We recently moved here from San Diego to Missouri. And he ran away again, and he went, like, all the way up there where his school is at because that's the only place he recognizes."

His sisters believe Jackson may have followed a familiar route from his school bus rides, which passed through wooded areas near streams and ponds. The family also said Jackson did not know how to swim.

A large-scale search involving police, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, K-9 units and drones continued throughout the morning before Jackson was located. Family pastor Gabriel Riak appealed for prayers and community support. "Come and support the family because they need our support and prayers," he said. "And also, I ask all the believers, please, let's just pray."

The Kansas City Police Department thanked all agencies that assisted in the search, including the Kansas City Fire Department, Gladstone Police, Riverside Police, North Kansas City Police, MO KAN Search and Rescue and others.
