Police Discover Alleged Makeshift Prison Cell
Investigators traced the child to a nearby residence, where officers said they encountered severe hoarding conditions. According to police, the home contained piles of trash, hundreds of flies and extensive clutter that made it difficult to move through the property.
The child's bedroom allegedly had a baby gate secured to the doorway using zip ties, duct tape and wooden boards fastened from the outside, preventing him from leaving the room without assistance. Child Allegedly Kept Confined for Long Periods
According to investigators, the boy spent about 90% of his time locked inside the room. Police allege he was fed granola bars, cereal, juice, milk and water through openings in the baby gates.
Court documents cited by local media state that one of the guardians, Jade Shuey, told investigators the child was sometimes left inside the room for up to three days without being allowed out, forcing him to relieve himself inside the room.
Investigators also allege that every time the child was allowed out, five to 10 zip ties securing the gates had to be cut before being replaced with new zip ties and duct tape. Authorities further alleged the adults purchased zip ties in bulk because they were frequently used to secure the room.
Three Guardians Arrested
Police identified the three adults living in the home as Tucker Heagy, 20, Jade Shuey, 21, and Stephanie Schaffner, 42. Officials said the trio served as the child's guardians, although authorities have not publicly disclosed their exact relationship to the boy. All three have been arrested and charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
The condition of the property prompted local code enforcement officials to condemn the residence. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's confinement and whether additional charges will be filed as the case progresses.
