The severe weather along the East Coast follows a trail of destruction left by violent storms across parts of the central Plains on Saturday. High-velocity winds and supercells generated extreme weather across Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska.
Softball-sized hail was reported on Saturday near Winfield, Kansas, about 45 miles south of Wichita, while hail larger than golf balls fell in several other sections of Kansas and Nebraska. In Neosho, Missouri, near Joplin, an automated weather station clocked winds reaching 84 mph, toppling mature trees and triggering widespread power outages.
Similar gusts exceeding 75 mph swept through adjacent areas. In Kansas City, Missouri, an intense storm triggered an hour-long delay during a game at Kauffman Stadium between the Kansas City Royals and the Houston Astros, forcing spectators to seek emergency shelter inside the concourse.
Soaking Rain in Store for the South This Week
Further south, a slow-moving cold front pushing toward the Gulf Coast is forecast to deliver prolonged, soaking rainfall at the beginning of the workweek.

Across the Pacific Northwest, heat advisories stretch from Medford, Oregon, through to Seattle. Forecasters have warned of a potentially life-threatening heat wave lasting through Tuesday, with daytime highs touching 95 to 100 degrees and overnight lows hovering in the 60s and 70s, leaving little opportunity for relief in unconditioned buildings.
