US-Greenland Deal: Donald Trump Announces Permanent Security Control, Bans Adversary Bases

US President Donald Trump has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving the United States permanent security access to Greenland and paving the way for an expanded military presence. The deal would also block US adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments on the Arctic island without American approval.

US President Donald Trump has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give the United States permanent security access to the strategically important Arctic island and allow Washington to expand its military presence there. The agreement would also restrict adversarial countries from establishing military bases or making certain sensitive investments in Greenland.

Trump announced the deal in a post on Truth Social, describing it as an 'Infinite Life' agreement. He said the United States would have the ability to take necessary measures to protect the security of Greenland and the US.

'We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland,' Trump wrote, adding that Washington would work with the people of Greenland on development and construction.

What Does the Greenland Deal Mean?

According to US officials cited by Reuters, the agreement would provide the United States with permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland. The provisions would reportedly remain in place even if Greenland becomes independent from Denmark. Iceland Summons US Ambassador After Donald Trump Posts Map Showing Island Under American Flag.

The agreement would also prevent non-NATO countries from establishing military bases in Greenland. Certain 'sensitive investments' by US adversaries would require American approval, according to a State Department official.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreement would permanently address Washington's national security concerns involving Greenland and keep the territory within the strategic defence area of North America.

US Military Presence in Greenland

The United States already maintains a military presence in Greenland through Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base. The exact scale of any future US military expansion remains unclear. Reuters reported that the agreement does not yet establish whether Washington will construct additional military bases on the island.

Trump's announcement marks a shift from his earlier push to acquire Greenland outright. The new agreement does not transfer Greenland's sovereignty to the United States. Denmark and Greenland have stressed that their sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination remain recognised.

Denmark, Greenland To Sign Agreement

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while recognising the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Greenland's leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen also said the agreement would strengthen security for Greenland, Denmark, the United States and the wider Western alliance. The pact is expected to be formally signed next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and will require parliamentary procedures before taking effect.

The agreement comes after months of tension over Trump's repeated demands for greater US control over Greenland. While Washington will gain expanded and potentially permanent military access, the island remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark under the announced arrangement.
