The accused, Steven Devon Mason Rivers, was arrested in connection with a s*xual assault reported early Sunday morning on the university’s Miami Gardens campus. Investigators say Rivers allegedly jumped over a wall to gain access to the campus before assaulting the student at an address on NW 42nd Avenue. Rape Accused Man Tries to Grope Female Detective During Jail Transport
Surveillance footage released by the Miami Gardens Police Department appears to show a man entering the campus unlawfully. Rivers was later apprehended by the Opa-locka Police Department and handed over to Miami Gardens police, according to CBS News Miami, a news partner of the Miami Herald. Bodycam footage captured officers attempting to calm Rivers during the arrest. “Rivers, talk to me for a second. You will be OK,” one officer is heard saying. Moments later, police repeatedly instruct him to comply, saying, “Get your hands out of your pocket… Stop right there. Show me your hands.”
However, during transport on Wednesday, Rivers allegedly “aggressively reached out” and attempted to grab the lead female detective’s private parts, a viral video showed. Officers quickly restrained him against a railing.
According to the affidavit, Rivers “spontaneously chuckled” and said, “Good catch, but I don’t give a f*ck.”
Rivers was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained jailed Thursday on a bond exceeding USD 510,000. He now faces multiple charges, including s*xual battery, battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and robbery by sudden snatching. His public defender did not respond to requests for comment.
