Singapore Man Who Raped Niece and 'Punished' Her With S*x Acts Gets 21 Years' Jail and 16 Strokes of Cane

A 38-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to 21 years’ jail and 16 strokes of the cane on Monday, August 3, for engaging in an illicit, long-term s*xual relationship with his then-13-year-old niece. The offender, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, pleaded guilty to six charges, including statutory rape and s*xual assault. Another 17 charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Exploitation of Trust

The court heard that the man abused his position of authority as a trusted family member to manipulate the teenager. Initially, their interactions were limited to occasional family gatherings, reports Channel News Asia. By October 2022, the pair had begun engaging in regular s*xual activity. The man frequently exploited his access to the girl, including during family trips to Malaysia and private staycations at hotels where he brought along alcohol and toys.

Manipulation and Coercion

When the teenager began dating a schoolmate in 2024, the man’s behaviour became increasingly coercive. He viewed the girl’s attempts to distance herself as a betrayal and used emotional manipulation to maintain control. "He told his niece that she had made a mistake and needed to repay him. If she did not comply with the s*x acts, she would need to break up with [her schoolmate]," court documents revealed. In addition to demanding s*x as a form of "punishment", the man threatened to leak nude photographs and videos of the teenager - which had been taken with her consent - on social media platforms and pornographic websites.

Legal Consequences

The teenager finally sought help from her teacher on August 6, 2024, describing her uncle’s persistent and manipulative behaviour. The matter was subsequently escalated to the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s Child Protection Services, and a police report was filed. While the defense requested a 16-year jail term, citing the offender’s guilty plea and claimed remorse, Justice Andre Maniam handed down the 21-year sentence, emphasising the severity of the abuse and the victim’s vulnerability. The man has been remanded to begin his sentence.
