Shimla, Feb 24 (PTI) Properties worth Rs 94 lakh belonging to Joni alias Jona, arrested in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in December 2019, and his relatives were seized on Friday, officials said.

He was arrested by the Damtal police in Kangra district for possessing 6.27 gram of heroin.

During a financial investigation, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Damtal found that properties worth of Rs 94 lakh have been acquired by the accused in his name and in the names of his relatives from illegal money earned through drug trade. The accused hails from Channi village of Indora in Kangra district.

The matter to seize or freeze the properties was taken up with the competent authority. The competent authority under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act and the NDPS Act passed the freezing order after which the properties were seized.

The property of the accused and 14 relatives seized by the police includes a double story house, single story house, Mahindra XUV-500, two motorcycles, two Punjab National Bank (PNB) Met life policies, three fixed deposits and four bank accounts besides cash recovered from the house.

Congratulating the superintendent of police of Nurpur and the SHO Damtal for conducting a financial investigation in the case, DGP Sanjay Kundu said that intelligence based operations, surveillance on drug peddlers and use of modern technology have yielded results.

Financial investigation in NDPS cases was started in Himachal in 2020 and so far properties worth approximately Rs 13.50 crore have been attached in about 23 cases, police officials said.

More than 1,500 NDPS cases are registered in the state every year with over 2,000 arrests. Consumption of heroin has added another dimension to the drug trade in Himachal, infamous for cannabis smuggling.

The Himachal Pradesh Police will organise a campaign against drug use in May-June.
