Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was batting on 80 off 132 balls after the hosts lost four quick wickets against an inspired South African bowling attack in the second session of play.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada claimed three wickets and left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamshi took two after Sri Lanka elected to bat first at the start of the two-match series. (AFP)
