Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
About Bharatiya Janata Party
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed in 1980 by the members of the former Jana Sangh after they separated from the then Janata Party. It is one of the two major political parties of the country. Presently, the BJP is the largest political party with 269 seats. The history of the BJP dated back to 1951 with the formation of Bharatiya Jana Sangh by Syama Prasad Mukherjee. After the emergency, the Jana Sangh merged with several other political outfits to form the Janata Party. However, the BJP managed to get only two seats in the Lok Sabha in the 1984 general elections. The party shares close ideology and organisational links with the pro-Hindu organisation, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh.
