Eight people have been killed and nine others sustained serious injuries following a powerful explosion at an illegal firecracker factory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Saturday afternoon. The blast occurred at a facility identified as Talent Fireworks, situated on a farm along the Ramol-Gatrad Road in the Vastral area. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 15:30 local time.

As per a report by India Today, the factory operator has been identified as Mehul Dodiya. Investigators have confirmed that the unit’s manufacturing licence had been previously cancelled, yet operations were allegedly continuing in defiance of the revocation. Local authorities have confirmed that the blaze has been successfully contained and the situation is now under control. Responders from the fire department and the Rapid Action Force were the first to arrive on the scene to initiate search and rescue operations.

The police have stated that a formal case will be registered against the operator. Charges are expected to include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, alongside relevant provisions of the Explosives Act. Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory have been deployed to the site to investigate the cause of the explosion and identify specific safety regulation violations.

Government Response and Compensation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. The central government has announced an ex gratia payment of INR 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the families of each deceased victim. Furthermore, those who sustained injuries in the blast are set to receive INR 50,000 each.
