Mumbai, February 21: In a harrowing incident that has left medical professionals and locals in shock, a 34-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district allegedly slit her own abdomen with a kitchen knife on Thursday, February 19, after being unable to endure the agony of labor pain. Despite the life-threatening self-inflicted wound, the woman was rushed to a nearby health center where she successfully delivered a healthy baby girl. The mother remains in critical condition and has been transferred to a specialized trauma center for advanced care.

The woman, identified as Nankai Kumari, a resident of Nandwal village, was alone at home when she went into labor. According to local police, her husband had passed away six months ago, and her four young sons were out playing at the time of the incident. Overwhelmed by the intensity of the contractions and with no adult present to assist her, she reportedly reached for a vegetable-cutting knife in a desperate attempt to end her suffering. Bijnor Shocker: Woman Kills Son for Raping Her in Uttar Pradesh, Arrested After She Confesses to Murder.

Villagers were alerted by Nankai’s screams and rushed to her home, where they found her in a pool of blood with severe abdominal injuries. She was immediately transported via ambulance to a local Community Health Centre (CHC). Recognizing the gravity of the situation, doctors at the CHC performed an emergency normal delivery at approximately 2:30 PM.

The newborn girl was found to be in stable condition and was admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at the Bahraich District Hospital for observation. However, Nankai’s condition rapidly deteriorated due to excessive blood loss and internal injuries. Uttar Pradesh: Woman Suffers Jaw Dislocation After She Opens Her Mouth To Eat Golgappa in Auraiya, Locked Jaw Reset by Doctor; Video Surfaces.

After initial efforts to stabilise her at the district hospital failed, medical authorities referred Nankai to the KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Doctors Rajesh Sonkar and Shivam Mishra, who attended to her in the emergency ward, confirmed that the abdominal wound was deep and required complex surgical intervention to repair the damage to her internal organs.

"The patient sustained a deep laceration to her abdomen," stated a district health official. "It is a miracle that the infant was unharmed during the act. Our current focus is on managing the mother’s internal hemorrhage and preventing infection."
