Bengaluru: 2-Wheelers May Soon Get Toll-Free Ride on Electronics City Elevated Corridor After NHAI Takeover

More than 25,000 two-wheeler commuters using Bengaluru's Electronics City elevated corridor every day may soon get toll relief after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took over the project following the end of its concession period on September 10.

The NHAI has taken charge of operating the toll plaza on the 10-km elevated corridor connecting Central Silk Board with Electronics City. Officials are now examining whether two-wheelers should be exempted from toll payments under the tolling policy applicable after the takeover.

Two-Wheelers Currently Pay Toll

The Electronics City elevated corridor became operational in 2010 and provides a signal-free route towards Electronics City, Bommasandra and Attibele. It is among the few urban road corridors where two-wheelers are currently charged a toll.

At present, a single trip for a two-wheeler costs INR 25, while the daily pass costs INR 40 and the monthly pass is priced at INR 785. More than 30,000 two-wheeler transactions are recorded at the toll plaza every day. NHAI to Cut Toll Rates on Partially Operational Expressways From February 15; Charges to Match National Highway Fees.

Commuters have also raised concerns about tolling arrangements, pointing out that the Electronics City and Attibele toll plazas are around 14 km apart.

NHAI To Review Tolling Rules

A senior NHAI official said the tolling framework is expected to change following the takeover. The earlier concessionaire, Bangalore Elevated Tollway, was collecting toll under the 1997 toll policy.

"Since NHAI has taken over the project, toll has to be collected under the 2008 policy. Under these rules, two-wheelers are not liable to pay toll on national highway stretches," the official said. FASTag Annual Pass Fee Revised by NHAI to INR 3,075 for Financial Year 2026–27; Effective From April 1.

This could pave the way for two-wheelers to be exempted from toll payments on the elevated corridor, although a final decision is yet to be announced.Toll rates for cars and other vehicles are also likely to be revised once NHAI shifts to the 2008 toll policy. Officials indicated that any increase in toll charges for cars, buses and other vehicles is likely to be marginal.

The elevated corridor was developed following requests from IT companies and the Karnataka government to ease congestion on Hosur Road and provide faster connectivity to the Electronics City area.

Officials said any decision to remove a toll plaza would have to be taken by NHAI. The authority is also examining a multi-lane free-flow tolling system, which could enable electronic toll collection without conventional toll plazas.
