Bengaluru Pothole Horror: Woman Suffers Crushed Ankle, Undergoes Surgery, Gets INR 1.97 Lakh Hospital Bill

A pothole on a Bengaluru road left a woman with a crushed ankle, emergency plastic surgery and a hospital bill of nearly INR 2 lakh. Aishani Khanna, a private-sector employee, was riding her scooter to work on August 20 when she hit a pothole on Whitefield-Varthur Road near Nexus Mall.

Khanna spent five days in hospital following the accident and was billed INR 1.97 lakh for her treatment. She has since shared her ordeal on X, appealing to authorities to address the condition of Bengaluru's roads.

"(A) hidden pothole on Varthur Road cost me a crushed ankle, emergency plastic surgery, 5 days in hospital, and Rs 1.97L. This could happen to ANY of us tomorrow. Fix the roads now," she wrote on X.

Khanna said she was taking the Varthur route while heading to her office because she had an errand to complete along the way. "It was about noon and raining pretty hard. I was on my two-wheeler and didn't see a pothole. I was up in the air for two or three seconds. I fell, and the scooter fell on me. I suffered seven or eight deep cuts or abrasions on my left ankle, which only plastic surgeons would look into," she said.

INR 1.97 Lakh Hospital Bill After Accident

Khanna remained in hospital for five days following the accident and underwent plastic surgery. She said the total hospital bill came to INR 1.97 lakh.

Her treatment may not be over yet. According to Khanna, doctors could recommend a second surgery depending on how her ankle heals.

She said the incident has also taken a mental and financial toll.

"It's not just the physical trauma that I went through. It was a lot of mental trauma and financial burden because it was very uncalled for," she said.

'There Is Absolutely No Road, Just Potholes'

Khanna, who said she has lived in Bengaluru for around 30 years, described the city's road conditions as a "sad state of affairs".

"There is absolutely no road, just potholes," she said, appealing to the government to improve road conditions.

Bengaluru's pothole problem has repeatedly drawn criticism from residents, with concerns ranging from road safety to waterlogging and traffic congestion.

The issue has also prompted repeated assurances from authorities, including Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who has said on several occasions that potholes would be filled.

For Khanna, however, one hidden pothole resulted in a serious accident, an injured ankle, emergency surgery, five days in hospital and a medical bill of INR 1.97 lakh.
