An assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead inside his staff quarters on the institute campus on Wednesday, July 29, police said. The deceased was identified as 36-year-old Deepak Reddy Pullaguram, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and a native of Hyderabad.

According to police, security personnel found Pullaguram hanging from the ceiling of a room in his staff quarters and informed authorities. Police reached the spot, recovered the body and registered a case of unnatural death. IIT Kharagpur Professor Found Dead in Staff Quarters

Kharagpur SDPO Siddarth Singh Dangi confirmed the incident and said an investigation was underway. "The body of a professor of IIT Kharagpur has been recovered from his room. He was found hanging from the ceiling. We are investigating the case," Kharagpur SDPO Siddarth Singh Dangi said.

Police said they are examining all possible angles, and the exact cause and circumstances leading to the professor’s death have not yet been determined. His family has been informed about the incident.

Staff Quarters Sealed, Clues Being Examined

According to reports, Pullaguram’s residence has been sealed as part of the investigation.

Investigators are questioning security guards, residents of the staff quarters and his colleagues to gather information about the events leading up to his death. The investigation team is also searching the residence for possible clues and examining whether any personal or professional issues may have played a role.

Academic Background of Deepak Reddy Pullaguram

According to information available on the IIT Kharagpur website, Pullaguram joined the institute in 2022 as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.

He completed his BTech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad. He later pursued an MTech in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) from the National Institute of Technology Warangal before completing his PhD at IIT Delhi.

Before joining IIT Kharagpur, Pullaguram worked as an assistant professor at NIT Warangal from June to November 2019. He had also worked at the University of Texas Arlington in the US from November 2018 to November 2019. The investigation into his death is ongoing.
