Raipur: 16-Year-Old Raped by Father, Passed Off as Adult; Newborn Sold, 8 Arrested
Police in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, have arrested eight individuals, including a father accused of repeatedly assaulting his 16-year-old daughter, following an investigation that uncovered severe s*xual abuse, forged identity documents, and illegal child trafficking.
A 16-year-old girl in Chhattisgarh's Raipur was allegedly s*xually assaulted repeatedly by her father and became pregnant twice, with police alleging that forged documents were later used to present her as an adult married woman at a private hospital. After she gave birth to a baby boy, the newborn was allegedly sold to another person, police said. Eight people, including the girl's father, paternal aunt and two nurses, have been arrested in connection with the case, TOI reported.
The case came to light on Monday after the teenager contacted her mother through social media and disclosed the alleged abuse. Her mother subsequently accompanied her to the police station, where a complaint was registered. Alleged Abuse Began in 2023
According to police, the alleged s*xual abuse began in 2023 after the girl's mother separated from her husband, leaving their three daughters in his care. The teenager, who was the eldest of the three sisters, alleged that her 38-year-old father s*xually assaulted her at a relative's house within the jurisdiction of New Rajendra Nagar police station.
Police said the father allegedly threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse. The alleged abuse continued and the girl became pregnant. Forced Abortion Alleged
Police alleged that the father subsequently obtained abortion pills with the assistance of the aunt and forced the teenager to take them. The girl suffered a miscarriage following the incident, according to police. Investigators said the alleged s*xual abuse continued after the first pregnancy, and the teenager became pregnant again in 2025.
Teenager Allegedly Passed Off as Adult
After the second pregnancy, the girl's father allegedly took her to the residence of a nurse, identified as Varsha Mandal. Mandal subsequently sent the teenager to the home of her acquaintance Geeta Rai, who is also a nurse. The girl reportedly stayed there for about two months.
Police alleged that Rai helped conceal the teenager's actual age and presented her as an adult married woman. Forged documents, including a fake Aadhaar card, were allegedly used to facilitate her admission to a private hospital in Raipur's Dangania area.
Baby Boy Allegedly Sold After Delivery
The teenager subsequently gave birth to a baby boy through a surgical procedure, police said. Investigators allege that after the delivery, the newborn was sold to another person with the involvement of the girl's father, a doctor and other accused individuals.
The teenager reportedly remained at Rai's residence for about 15 days after giving birth before her father took her back home. Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged transfer of the newborn, including the role of the people involved in the hospital admission and subsequent handover.
Eight Arrested
Police have arrested eight people in connection with the case. Those arrested include the teenager's father and paternal aunt, Rohit Kumar Rai, 35, his wife Yogita Rai alias Geeta, 32, Saheb Mandal, 42, a private hospital supervisor, his wife Varsha Mandal, 34, a man suspected of purchasing the newborn and another woman, according to the Times of India report based on police information. Earlier reports had cited a lower number of arrests as the investigation developed. The latest Times of India report puts the number at eight.
POCSO, BNS and Juvenile Justice Act Invoked
A case has been registered at New Rajendra Nagar police station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections dealing with rape, forgery, criminal intimidation, causing hurt, acts relating to miscarriage and common intention. The police have also invoked provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. The allegations include sexual abuse of a minor, preparation and use of forged identity documents and the alleged sale of the newborn.
Investigation Continues
Police are continuing to investigate the alleged involvement of the accused and the circumstances surrounding the teenager's hospital admission and the baby's subsequent transfer. The case also raises questions about the verification of age and identity documents during the hospital admission process. The allegations against the accused are subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. Further details are expected as police examine documents, hospital records and other evidence related to the case.
