A sanitation worker and a security guard died on Sunday morning after inhaling toxic gases inside a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) tank at a residential society in Greater Noida Sector 150. Police have arrested the maintenance contractor responsible for the operation and launched an investigation into potential safety violations. The victims have been identified as Shashikant Sharma, a sanitation worker, and Akash, a security guard at Eldeco Society. According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 5:00 AM during routine maintenance work on the society's sewage system.

Police reported that Sharma entered the STP tank to carry out cleaning work when he rapidly lost consciousness due to toxic fumes. Seeing Sharma collapse, Akash entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him, but succumbed to the hazardous gases shortly after entering the confined space. Emergency teams, including police and fire service personnel, arrived at the scene following an urgent call from residents. Rescuers pulled both men out of the tank and transported them to a nearby hospital, where attending doctors declared them dead on arrival.

The Knowledge Park Police Station has registered a case regarding the incident and subsequently arrested the contractor managing the maintenance work. Investigators are currently assessing whether mandatory safety gear—such as gas detectors, breathing apparatus, and protective harnesses—was provided to the workers before they entered the high-risk area.

The fatal accident marks the second major safety-related fatality in the Knowledge Park police jurisdiction within recent days. Earlier, a six-year-old child drowned after falling into an uncovered, water-filled pit at another residential complex in the area, leading to an FIR against project supervisors and authorities terminating responsible contractors.
