The Surat Cyber Crime Branch has arrested a 47-year-old social media influencer with approximately one million followers for allegedly posting an explicit video featuring a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi on an INR 500 currency note. The accused, identified as Simran Patel, a homemaker residing in the Adajan area of Surat, was taken into custody following a formal citizen complaint over online content deemed offensive and obscene.
Investigation and Arrest
According to investigators, the controversial reel was uploaded to Instagram between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM on October 1. The footage digitally linked the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on a currency note with s*xually suggestive statements and gestures. Following a formal complaint filed by a local citizen, the Cyber Crime Police Station registered a case under Section 67 of the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008. The operation was conducted under the directives of senior police leadership, including Police Commissioner Wabang Jamir, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dr Karanraj Vaghela, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell) Bishakha Jain. A technical team led by Police Inspector N.R. Patel traced and apprehended the account holder.
Police Warning on Social Media Content
In the wake of the arrest, the Cyber Crime Branch issued a stern advisory cautioning social media users against publishing or forwarding unverified or inflammatory material. Authorities emphasised that sharing obscene or insulting content involving national figures, historical symbols, or religious entities can invite strict legal consequences.
