New Delhi, July 3: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new facility allowing residents to add or update their email ID in Aadhaar directly through the Aadhaar App, without needing to visit an enrolment centre. The service is being offered free of cost from July 1 to December 31, 2026, waiving the usual INR 75 fee for app-based updates during this period.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the initiative has already seen a strong response, with more than 2.5 lakh people updating their email addresses within the first two days of launch.

Why This Update Matters

Linking an email ID with Aadhaar allows users to receive real-time notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is carried out, adding an extra layer of visibility and security to how the identity document is used. UIDAI said the move is aimed at making it easier for residents to keep their Aadhaar information accurate and up to date without the inconvenience of physical visits. Aadhaar App Hits 31 Crore Downloads Milestone in Less Than 5 Months, Over 40 Lakh Mobile Numbers Updated.

How To Update Your Email ID

The process can be completed entirely through the Aadhaar App, available on both Android and iOS platforms. Users need to log in using their Aadhaar number and registered mobile details, navigate to the email update section, enter their desired email address, and complete verification through an OTP.

The update is typically processed within 30 days, with confirmation sent via SMS to the registered mobile number. Users can track the status of their request either on the UIDAI website or by calling the toll-free helpline, 1947.

Part Of A Broader App Upgrade

The email update feature builds on the capabilities of the revamped Aadhaar App, which replaced the earlier mAadhaar platform. The new app also supports mobile number and address updates directly from a smartphone, and includes features such as selective data sharing, QR code verification, face authentication, biometric controls and authentication history, aimed at giving users greater control over their personal information. Aadhaar Card Is Not Proof of Family Relationship, Says UP Government Amid MEA’s Passport Clarification.

UIDAI said over four crore people have already updated their mobile numbers through the Aadhaar App, while around 10 lakh users have used the platform to update their address details.

Why Keeping Aadhaar Updated Matters

With Aadhaar increasingly used for digital identity verification across public and private services, UIDAI has encouraged residents to take advantage of the free email update window while it lasts. The authority said removing both the cost and the need for a physical visit is intended to encourage wider participation in keeping Aadhaar records accurate.
