A major road accident on NH-27 in West Bengal’s Maynaguri claimed four lives and injured dozens on Sunday morning. An NBSTC bus travelling from Siliguri to Cooch Behar reportedly lost control on a rain-soaked road and crashed into the rear of a stationary trailer parked along the highway.
A major road accident on National Highway 27 (NH-27) in the Ulladabari area of Maynaguri claimed four lives and left dozens injured on Sunday morning. The incident occurred when a North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) passenger bus, traveling from Siliguri to Cooch Behar, lost control on a rain-slicked road and crashed into the rear of a stationary heavy trailer parked along the highway.
The impact of the collision was severe, completely mangling the front portion of the government bus and trapping several passengers inside the wreckage. Local residents immediately rushed to the spot to launch initial rescue efforts before personnel from the Maynaguri Police Station, fire services, and emergency medical teams arrived with heavy cutting equipment to extricate those trapped. A total of 32 victims—consisting of 17 women and 15 men—were initially rushed to the Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital, where officials confirmed that four individuals succumbed to their injuries. Several other victims with severe injuries have since been transferred to nearby specialized facilities for advanced care, while over 20 passengers with minor injuries are undergoing treatment at the Maynaguri Rural Hospital.
Expressing deep grief over the tragedy, the state government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, the government will provide ₹1 lakh to those grievously injured and ₹50,000 to individuals who sustained minor injuries. The entire cost of medical care for the victims will be fully borne by the state medical facilities. A high-level police investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the crash, including whether driver negligence, high speeding, or mechanical failure played a role. Senior administrative officials, including the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, are visiting the accident site to oversee the inquiry and ensure smooth traffic restoration on the busy highway.
