A local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and his elderly father were found dead at their residence in Ashoknagar in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Saturday, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The deceased were identified as 49-year-old Sanjay Raut and his 72-year-old father, Kamal Raut.

A local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and his elderly father were found dead at their residence in Ashoknagar in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Saturday, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The deceased were identified as 49-year-old Sanjay Raut and his 72-year-old father, Kamal Raut. Sanjay Raut’s body was found hanging from the balcony of the house, while his father was found unconscious inside the same residence. Kamal Raut was rushed to Ashoknagar State General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have sent both bodies for post-mortem examination. A district police officer said the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths would be established after the detailed post-mortem reports. According to local accounts cited by news reports, Kamal Raut may have consumed sleeping pills. Police are examining whether Sanjay may have given his father sleeping medication before taking his own life, but investigators have not reached a final conclusion. Sanjay Raut was a former youth TMC president in the Ashoknagar area and was known locally as an active party worker. He was also associated with former Ashoknagar MLA Narayan Goswami, according to local reports. Besides his political activities, Raut was involved in an import-export business. Some local residents claimed that he had been under pressure because of business losses in recent times. Police are examining all possible circumstances surrounding the deaths.
