Lucknow, April 18: In the run up to Lok Sabha Elections 2019, Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Maneka Gandhi on Thursday filed her nomination from Sultanpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Maneka is contesting from Sultanpur where the BJP has pitted against Sanjay Singh of Congress and Chandra Bhadra Singh of the Bahujan Samajh Party (BSP). In Uttar Pradesh, there is going to be a three-way contest with SP-BSP combine against the BJP and the Congress. Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Schedule. 

Polling in Sultanpur will be held in the sixth phase on May 12. On March 10, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced dates for Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. Polls in the state will be held in seven phases on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12, May 19. In 2014, Maneka Gandhi's son Varun Gandhi, had won the Sultanpur seat. However, Varun is contesting from Pilibhit, from where his mother had won in 2014. In Uttar pradesh, several high profile candidates including Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav will file their nominations on Thursday. Poonam, wife of Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha will hold a roadshow in Lucknow before filing her nomination.

On April 12, Maneka sparked a major controversy when she asked Muslims in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh to vote for her if they wanted jobs. While addressing an election rally in Turab Khani village, the BJP leader said that she would not give jobs to Muslims if they did not vote for her. She also said that she would not like it if she won without the support of Muslims.
