Meerut, December 24: Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi were stopped by Uttar Pradesh police from entering Meerut on Tuesday. According to a tweet by the Congress, Priyanka and Rahul told cops that they would travel in a group of three, thus, no violation of Section 144 will be committed. However, police didn't allow them to proceed, said the Congress. She visited Nehtaur area of the district to meet the families of Anas and Suleman, who were killed in the recent violence over protests against the CAA. She also met the family members of Omraj Saini, who was shot at by the police and is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meerut. The Congress General Secretary also interacted with the people in the area.

As many as 16 people have been reportedly killed in anti-CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh. The deaths had been reported from Bijnor, Sambhal, Ferozabad, Kanpur, Varanasi and Meerut. Violence mainly broke out when police stopped people from taking out processions against the CAA. Section 144 remains imposed across Uttar Pradesh.
