New Delhi, January 17: Following the chaos and tensions between the Central Bureau of Investigation and Central Vigilance Commission, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal of Department of Personnel and Training decision of curtailment of Special CBI Director Rakesh Asthana with immediate effect. Along with Asthana, three other officers’ tenure has also been curtailed and moved to Civil Aviation.

Providing more information about the latest development, the central appointment committee released an official statement, quoting the curtailment of the tenure of four senior IPS officers, posted in CBI. Among the names involved, other than Asthana include – Joint Director Arun Kumar Sharma, DIG Manish Kumar Sinha and Superintendent of Police Jayant J Naiknavare. PM Modi-Led Selection Committee to Meet on January 24 to Appoint New CBI Director.

The development is quite surprising as the decision comes days after the reports arrived that the high-powered selection committee headed by PM Narendra Modi met with CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to decide to new appointment of CBI chief.

Earlier on January 10, the selection committee removed then CBI Director Alok Verma from the top post after CVC submitted the report stating graft charges against him.

Also, in another development, the Delhi High Court on January 11 refused to quash an FIR registered against CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana and suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devender Kumar. Dismissing Rakesh Asthana and Devender Kumar's pleas seeking quashing of the FIR, the court said the probe into corruption charges needs to continue expeditiously.
