Maiduguri, January 4: At least 25 people have died and 14 others remain missing after a boat carrying 52 passengers capsized in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, on Saturday night. The large canoe, which departed from Adiyani village in Jigawa State, was en route to Garbi when it overturned mid-journey around 8 p.m. local time. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that 13 survivors have been rescued so far. Preliminary investigations by the Jigawa State police suggest the accident was caused by a hull leakage and overloading. Authorities noted that the victims were returning from a local market. Search and rescue operations involving local divers and security agencies are ongoing, while police have warned that the vessel’s operator may face prosecution for violating bans on night travel.
