Both Serena and Federer were chasing record victories at the Grass Court in SW19 but were kept waiting as Serbian Djokovic and Romania’s Halep scripted history. Serena remains one title away from equalling Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, while Federer could have become the first man to lift nine Wimbledon titles.

But Halep burst aside Serena in 55 minutes beating her for identical scores of 6-2 in two sets to lift the crown and become the first Romanian to do so. By the time Djokovic-Federer stopped playing, the game had already attained vintage status. It ended as the longest ever final in Wimbledon’s history after going on for 4 hours and 57 minutes. Djokovic eventually won, beating the Swiss master 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 13-12 (7-3) in an epic classic Wimbledon will never forget.

As the tradition goes, both Djokovic and Halep later posed together for the paparazzi at the official function of Wimbledon – closing party – after another exciting tournament drew to an end.
