Meta Layoffs 2026: Internal Memo Details May 20 Restructuring and Job Cuts
Meta will lay off 10% of its workforce, or 8,000 employees, starting May 20, according to an internal memo reviewed by Reuters. The company plans to flatten its corporate structure and reassign 7,000 workers to AI initiatives. Affected global staff will receive notifications in three batches. Meta declined to comment on the job cuts.
Meta detailed its upcoming workforce restructuring in an internal memo circulated to staff on Monday, May 18, outlining a plan to downsize its workforce and pivot heavily toward artificial intelligence. According to an internal document reviewed by Reuters, the Facebook parent company plans to lay off 10% of its global workforce, a move that will affect approximately 8,000 employees. The structural changes and job cuts are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 20.
In the memo, Meta’s Head of Human Resources and Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale, informed staff that organizational leaders will announce wide-ranging structural updates in coordination with the staff reductions. A core component of the restructuring involves shifting roughly 7,000 employees into new initiatives specifically centered on AI workflows.
The strategy aims to streamline management layers and accelerate development speeds across the company's product suites. "As org leaders worked on the changes, many of them incorporated AI native design principles into their new org structures," Gale wrote in the memo, as reported by Reuters. "We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership."
Gale added that leadership believes the transition will increase overall productivity and make internal roles more rewarding. Concurrently, the company is eliminating certain managerial positions to support this flatter design. Meta Layoffs Rollout
The workforce reductions will impact teams across Meta's international offices, rather than being isolated to its US operations. According to the internal document, formal notifications will be distributed globally on Wednesday in three separate batches beginning at 4 AM local time.
The memo also indicated that further deep job cuts could occur later this year as the company continues its operational realignment. When approached for a statement regarding the contents of the internal memo, a Meta spokesperson declined to comment. Meta's Strategic Shift Toward AI
The impending layoffs reflect Meta's broader capital and operational pivot toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and software deployment. The company has aggressively ramped up capital expenditure budgets for AI development, focusing heavily on internal automated workflows and independent AI agents.
While the shift toward AI-centric engineering groups aims to optimise long-term efficiency, it has also faced recent internal friction. The strategic overhaul follows reported employee pushback and petitions regarding a newly implemented internal activity-tracking tool, which Meta stated is used to train AI models to replicate human computer interaction.
