Elizabeth Siders Pleads Not Guilty to Child Endangerment, Battery Charges Involving 16 Children

An Ohio woman found living with her 16 children in deeply unsanitary conditions has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including child endangerment and s*xual battery involving a minor in a separate case. Elizabeth Siders, 34, entered her plea during an arraignment in Vinton County court, months after she was arrested in June alongside her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and his parents, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, following a search warrant that uncovered the children living amid feces-strewn conditions, with prosecutors noting that some of the children could not speak.

Two Separate Sets Of Charges

Siders pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of child endangerment tied to the discovery of her children living in the squalid home.

Court documents allege the abuse involved a victim who was not one of the couple's own children but a minor for whom Siders was said to be acting in a caregiving capacity, between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time.

Court Proceedings And Custody Details

During Wednesday's hearing, the judge barred Siders from any contact with her children, her husband, or the minor victim in the case, and set her bond at USD 250,000, on top of an existing USD 300,000 bond linked to the child endangerment charges.

She remains in custody, and her 16 children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, have been placed in state custody.

Her defense attorney argued that Siders herself may be a victim of her circumstances, pointing to the fact that she was married at 15 and has been pregnant for most of the past two decades without adequate medical care or recovery time between pregnancies. How The Investigation Unfolded

Authorities said the case originated from a separate investigation launched in December into alleged s*xual abuse involving two children, which led to arrests of two men from South Bloomingville.

That inquiry later expanded in March into a fresh investigation targeting Gary Jr. and Elizabeth Siders over allegations of unlawful s*xual conduct with a minor, eventually leading to the June 30 search of their home and the discovery of the children's living conditions.

Where The Other Family Members Stand

Gary Siders Jr. has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him and remains in jail, while his father, Gary Siders Sr., 73, was recently found mentally incompetent to stand trial, with his attorney stating his condition has been deteriorating for years and is unlikely to improve.

Christina Siders, 68, has pleaded not guilty to the initial charges and is awaiting arraignment on the indictment, with a bond hearing scheduled for Monday. Both Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders have also requested competency evaluations, with results pending.
